The attorney who negotiated hush-money payments for Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal—who both claimed to have had affairs with Donald Trump—said he believes the president could still be at legal risk for his alleged role in the efforts to silence the women. “It’s clear that [federal prosecutors] alleged that [Michael Cohen] was part of a criminal conspiracy to commit campaign-finance laws [violations],” Keith Davidson told ABC News, adding: “By definition, a conspiracy must involve more than one person—so who else could it be?” In court documents filed in December, U.S. attorneys in the Southern District of New York said that Michael Cohen acted “in coordination with and at the direction of” then-candidate Trump, and Davidson says he spent around 15 hours with them and handed over more than 1,500 documents as part of their investigation into potential campaign-finance violations. Davidson said it “became clear” to him during those meetings that prosecutors believe the payments were made in a political effort to salvage Trump’s campaign for president—not in a personal attempt to protect his family.
