Facebook Hires Former U.K. Deputy PM Nick Clegg as Head of Global Affairs

Facebook hired Nick Clegg, the former U.K. deputy prime minister, to head up its global affairs and communications team, The Wall Street Journal reports. Clegg will reportedly be replacing Elliot Schrage and will start in his new position on Monday. Clegg’s experience as a European lawmaker and a European Commission trade negotiator could help the company mend its tattered reputation in the European sphere after the Cambridge Analytica breach was uncovered earlier this year, the Journal reports. The company also reportedly could face a European Union fine of $1.63 billion for the improper use of millions of users’ personal data. In a Facebook post, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said the company needed new perspectives “now more than ever.” “His [Mr. Clegg’s] experience and ability to work through complex issues will be invaluable in the years to come,” she wrote in a Facebook post.
