Famed Figure-Skating Coach Accused of Sexual Misconduct Suspended

Richard Callaghan, a top figure-skating coach who worked with Tara Lipinski when she won Olympic gold, has been suspended by the U.S. Center for SafeSport and U.S. Figure Skating amid a new investigation of sexual-misconduct allegations leveled against him nearly 20 years ago. Several male skaters have accused Callaghan of abuse, including Craig Maurizi, who filed a complaint against the coach with the United States Figure Skating Association in 1999. He accused Callaghan of inappropriate sexual conduct with him when he was just 15 years old, according to the New York Times. Another student told the newspaper Callaghan exposed himself to him in 1992. Maurizi said the coach’s suspension is “a great step in the right direction," adding that he’s seeking legal representation. Callaghan, who still teaches figure skating in Florida, said he hadn’t been notified of the suspension.
