FBI Believed Trump Campaign Adviser Recruited by Russia

The FBI believed Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was recruited by Russian operatives, according to a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court application to wiretap him. The secret surveillance documents, released to the New York Times, said “The F.B.I. believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government.” The following line is redacted, but then continues “undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election in violation of U.S. criminal law. Mr. Page is a former foreign policy adviser to a candidate for U.S. president.” Page has denied being a Russian agent. The Justice Department released the application Friday after a Freedom of Information Act request. Republicans have said the warrant was not obtained legally and there has been debate surrounding whether the infamous Steele Dossier was used to justify the wiretap.
