The Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that some EpiPens can be used for four months past their expiration date in an effort to cover shortages ahead of the new school year, NBC News reports. The agency reviewed data from Mylan, the EpiPen manufacturer, showing that certain expired pens could still be used. In certain areas in the U.S., the lifesaving medication for those with extreme allergies has only been available in limited quantities due to “regional supply disruptions and manufacturer issues.” Woodcock said that the FDA would work with the “manufacturer to increase supply,” and hoped the announcement would give parents “additional peace of mind.” This comes after the agency approved a generic competitor to the EpiPen, but has yet to announce its release date.
