A female soldier is on track to become the first woman Green Beret after she passed the Special Forces Assessment and Selection, a first since the U.S. Army made women eligible for special-operations jobs in 2016. The woman, who military officials say will remain anonymous due to the sensitive missions carried out by the Green Berets, has been selected to move on to the next round of the process, the Special Forces Qualification Course, USASOC spokesman Lt. Col. Loren Bymer told CNN late Wednesday. “We’re proud of all the candidates who attended and were selected to continue into the qualification course in hopes of earning their Green Beret,” Bymer said. The SFAS is a grueling, 24-day assessment of a candidate’s mental and physical endurance with a notoriously high dropout rate. Several women have attempted the test since it was first opened to women in 2016, Bymer said.
