A flight to Mexico was forced to make an unplanned landing in Bermuda due to a noxious odor wafting from the 100 pigs in the plane’s cargo hold. Flight KL685, operated by Dutch airline KLM, had departed from Amsterdam en route to Mexico City on Friday. Six hours into the flight, the pilot requested to make an unplanned stop for fresh air due to the “obnoxious” smell being emitted from the live pigs stowed aboard. The aircraft, its crew, and the 259 human passengers landed in Bermuda late Friday where the were put up in hotels for the night due to reported “oxygen issues.” Ultimately the 100 pigs were unloaded and left on the island, and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner departed for Mexico City on Saturday following a nearly 30-hour delay. “The pigs, living high on the hog during their impromptu holiday stopover, are being cared for at a secure location on the island, with assistance from a government veterinarian,” a Skyport spokesperson said. On Sunday night, the swine were loaded onto an empty cargo plane and sent to Mexico City.
