A former United States Air Force counterintelligence agent has been charged with espionage for allegedly helping Iran target her former colleagues, according to authorities. Monica Elfriede Witt gave the Iranians the code name and mission of a secret Pentagon program, prosecutors said Wednesday. As a counterintelligence officer in the Air Force from 1997 to 2008, Witt had access to operations, and the identities of American officials involved in their recruitment, according to the indictment. In 2013, Witt defected to Iran, where she allegedly worked with members of Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, creating “target packages” for Iran against American counterintelligence officials. The Guard Corps is known to carry out terrorist operations around the globe and has been sanctioned by the U.S. government.
