Two bills that would have allowed the whitest and wealthiest area of Atlanta secede and form its own city were voted down in the Georgia Senate on Thursday, a day after Gov. Brian Kemp’s administration raised questions about the legality of the proposal in a memo to lawmakers. The legislation to create Buckhead City failed by a 33-23 vote, with some Republicans giving it a thumb’s down. “Atlanta is one city, with one bright future,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said after the vote.
