The Girl Scouts of the United States of America are suing the Boy Scouts over the organization’s decision to drop “boy” from its branding, claiming it has caused confusion among parents and children. The trademark infringement lawsuit, which was filed Tuesday, claims the Boy Scouts, which announced in May its decision to drop the male identifier from the brand as girls are now admitted to the program, is creating a monopoly over such terms as “scouts” or “scouting,” and erodes the Girl Scouts brand and “marginalizes” its activities. “Only GSUSA has the right to use the Girl Scouts and Scouts trademarks with leadership development services for girls,” according to the complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction against the Boy Scouts’ name change.
