On the same day that a new Monmouth poll found Democratic candidate Conor Lamb beating Republican nominee Rick Saccone in a special election for Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district, the state’s GOP chairman dismissed the race as being in a “Democrat district.” Speaking with Fox News on Monday, Val DiGiorgio said: “[The] reason it’s so tight is, you have to remember, this is a Democrat district, notwithstanding the fact that the president won this by 20 points [in 2016].” The chairman’s claim is bizarrely counterfactual, considering Republican Rep. Tim Murphy, who resigned last year amid scandal, ran unopposed by any Democrats in the last two election cycles.
