Elon Musk is suddenly very eager to distance himself from a potential government shutdown after he helped tank a bipartisan continuing-resolution deal on Thursday. After assuring users of his social media platform X that a shutdown really wouldn’t be that big of a problem and backing a shutdown over allowing the bipartisan deal to pass, Musk is now trying to pin a looming government closure on Democrats. After Musk’s flurry of social media opposition to the original deal, president-elect Donald Trump demanded that House Republicans scrap the deal at the 11th hour and suspend the debt limit as part of a new, pared-down bill. That new bill crashed and burned after 38 Republicans joined Democrats in voting against it, making a shutdown look increasingly likely. “A super fair and simple bill was put to a vote and only two Democrats in Congress were in favor,” Musk tweeted after the Trump-backed bill’s failure. “Therefore, responsibility for the shutdown rests squarely on the shoulders of [House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)]”, he wrote. Musk then followed that post with twomore, both within the hour, saying basically the same thing. The posts made no mention of the fact that Musk had personally crusaded against a bipartisan deal to keep the government open for another three months after funding is set to expire at midnight Friday.
