Gunman Who Killed Off-Duty Chicago Cop Fired at ‘First Hispanic Man’ He Saw: Police
HORRIBLE
Chicago police are seeking hate-crime charges against the man who allegedly shot and killed one of their officers while he was off-duty. Menelik Jackson is accused of randomly shooting Officer John Rivera while seeking revenge for his friend who was punched during a dispute with a group of Hispanic men unrelated to Rivera. Jackson opened fire into Rivera’s vehicle, killing the 23-year-old and critically wounding one of his friends, according to police. At a Monday news conference, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the fatal attack was fueled by Jackson’s desire for vengeance, adding that Jackson went after “the first Hispanic man that he came in contact with.” “Officers in Rivera’s 6th District class are suffering right now,” Johnson said. “They lost a friend . . . lost a young guardian who wanted nothing else but to make the city he grew up in safer.”
