Controversial kicker Harrison Butker just got his Kansas City Chiefs contract extended until 2028 to the tune of $25.6 million over four years. NBC News reports that this includes a $17.75 million guarantee. The news, despite the team’s status and recent Super Bowl win, comes after Butker got himself in hot water after comments he made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College in May. In the speech, which many found sexist and homophobic, Butker referenced “dangerous gender ideologies,” slammed Joe Biden’s abortion stance, and urged female graduates to consider marriage and motherhood. The backlash against the speech was relentless, with over 100,000 people signing a petition to have Butker dropped from the team. In response, he doubled down. “But as to be expected, the more I’ve talked about what I value most, which is my Catholic faith, the more polarizing I have become. It’s a decision I’ve consciously made, and one I do not regret at all,” he said at a gala weeks later.
