Heroin use has drastically increased among women and the middle class over the past 10 years, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report, which compares data from 2002-2004 with data from 2011-2014, shows heroin use doubling among women and growing 60 percent among households with median incomes of at least $50,000. The report also shows that around 75 percent of first-time heroin users first became addicted to prescription painkillers such as OxyContin and Vicodin, before they turned to cheaper, illegal drugs like heroin.
