Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen denied anEl Paso Democrat's request for a meeting, but agreed to sit down with the city’s only elected official who is a registered Republican, a reporter said on Twitter. Nielsen met Friday with the city’s mayor, Dee Margo, to discuss “our needs on the border,” he said on Twitter. Veronica Escobar, a Congresswoman-elect from El Paso, reportedly claims that she too had requested a meeting with Nielsen, but was shot down. “JUST IN: Confirmed with @vgescobar that she requested to meet with @SecNielsen as well, but the request was denied. Margo is the only elected official in El Paso who is a registered Republican,” reporter Andra Litton tweeted. Shortly after Anda’s tweet, Dee responded on Twitter: “My office submitted a meeting request several weeks ago. The timing of @SecNielsen visit to El Paso happened to align with my schedule. My position as Mayor is nonpartisan and political affiliation was never discussed when requesting the meeting.” The Border Patrol’s El Paso division was in charge of the two migrant children who died in its custody within two weeks.
I appreciate @SecNielsen taking the time to meet with me to discuss the El Paso region, and our needs on the border. Our federal officials should visit the border when making decisions about our immigration system, and @SecNielsen visit is most welcome
