House Dems Push for Transgender Rights

NONDISCRIMINATION

Would provide job protections.

One of the few openly gay members of the House, Democrat Barney Frank of Massachusetts, is heading up a bill that would bring transgender civil rights to the workplace. Currently in the works, the bill is known as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and would provide job protections for gay and transgender workers. While the number of supporters is being crunched, moderate and conservative Democrats facing tense reelection battles in the fall find themselves in an uneasy position. The bill's prospects for passing in the Senate are, according to The Washington Post, "somewhere between slim and none." Some organizations are already lashing out: The Traditional Values Coalition's home page asks, "Do you want men dressed as women teaching your kids?" And the group also warns, "Your children will be trapped in classes taught by drag queens and transgender activists."
