House Speaker Paul Ryan has announced two votes next week on competing immigration bills to address the fate of hundreds of thousands of Dreamers facing deportation. The move, which came after hours of late-night negotiations, has effectively quashed a rebellion by moderate Republicans seeking to force votes on bipartisan legislation that would have protected Dreamers. Ryan offered few details on the two competing proposals, but his spokeswoman, Ashlee Strong, said they would “resolve the border security and immigration issues.” One still-in-the-works compromise package is expected to include a path to citizenship for some Dreamers, while the other hard-line proposal backed by President Trump will take a stricter approach. House Republicans are scheduled to meet behind closed doors Wednesday to discuss the issue, though the bills are already widely seen as unlikely to pass.
