Indianapolis 500 Winner Dies While Racing Son

Gil de Ferran was reportedly racing his son, Luke, at a private course in Florida when he pulled over and complained that he was not feeling well.

Gil de Ferran, the 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner who held the closed-course land speed record, died Friday of a heart attack, the AP reports. He was 56. Fellow Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan said de Ferran died while racing with his son, Luke, at The Concourse Club in Florida. Kanaan said de Ferran pulled over saying he felt unwell. He was unable to be revived after suffering a heart attack.
