The official search for survivors and victims of Indonesia’s earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi province will be called off Thursday, despite thousands of people still being unaccounted for. Rescuers have been desperately searching for people in the two weeks since the double disaster hit—the death toll stood at 2,065 at the end of Wednesday. Officially, just 680 people are missing, but the number could be as high as 5,000 because hundreds of homes were sucked into the earth by the disasters. One woman with a missing son told the BBC that she wanted the search to be extended, saying: “I believe my son is still alive.” The official search will end with mass prayers in areas of Palu city that were worst affected.
