Adrian Cronauer, the sergeant, airman, and real-life inspiration for the film “Good Morning, Vietnam,” died Thursday in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 79, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. While serving as an Air Force sergeant in 1955 and 1956, Cronauer began his armed forces radio show with the now-iconic greeting: “Goooooood morning, Vietnam!” His story was popularized by the 1987 film of the same name, in which a loose adaptation of Cronauer was played by Robin Williams. The Inquirer adds that Cronauer worked as a teacher and freelancer after his service, before becoming an adviser for the Pentagon.
