It’s not the season for nuclear escalation, thinks Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to U.S., European, and Israeli officials, Khamenei is keeping the country’s nuclear program within limits demanded by Israel in a move to consolidate his political position in the upcoming June election. These officials say he hopes to replace President Ahmadinejad with a closer ally and wants to quiet international tensions. For now. So don’t breathe that sigh of relief yet—experts say Iran’s uranium could be enriched to weapons-grade very quickly.
