Iran Hangs 16 Rebels

In retaliation for the deaths of at least 14 border guards in an ambush, 16 rebels have been hanged, according to Iranian news agencies. The Friday night attack took place in the mountains outside Saravan and was blamed on “anti-revolution guerrillas.” It’s unclear whether the hanged rebels had previously been tried and convicted—one report suggests that they were and the date of their executions was moved up after the attacks, but it is also still unclear what connection, if any, the 16 rebels had with the border attack.
