Marzieh Hashemi, an Iranian state television anchorwoman who was born in the U.S., has reportedly been freed from U.S. detention after giving testimony before a federal grand jury. Abed Ayoub, policy director at the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday, writing that Hashemi was released after being held for 10 days. According to the Associated Press, Hashemi was detained by federal authorities in St. Louis while visiting family and filming a documentary on Black Lives Matter. Officials said she was poised to be released after giving grand jury testimony as a “material witness” in a criminal case. Details on the criminal case were not available, according to the AP. Hashemi, who lives in Tehran, reportedly appeared twice before a U.S. district judge in Washington and was appointed an attorney.
