Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old California girl declared brain-dead after complications from surgery in December, was released from the hospital Sunday for a “destination unknown,” or most likely, a treatment center in New York. Jahi underwent surgery on Dec. 9 for sleep apnea, and suffered heavy bleeding, cardiac arrest, and “whole brain death” in the days following the surgery. She was declared brain-dead Dec. 12, and the Alameda County Coroner’s Office issued her a death certificate that listed Dec. 12 as her date of death. Jahi’s family has protested the hospital’s decision to remove her from a ventilator.
