Jeremy Hunt Replaces Boris Johnson As U.K. Foreign Minister

British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Jeremy Hunt to be the country’s new foreign minister on Monday after Boris Johnson resigned in protest, Reuters reports. “Huge honour to be appointed Foreign Secretary at this critical moment in our country’s history,” he tweeted, adding that “it’s now or never” to get a “great Brexit deal.” Hunt, the former health minister, is seen as a close ally to May, who has been at odds with Johnson’s pro-Brexit voice. Hunt, on the other hand, was a supporter of the U.K. remaining in the European Union during last year’s referendum vote. Johnson resigned in frustration of May’s push to remain close to the E.U. in negotiations. In his resignation letter, he said that the U.K. was “heading for the status of a colony” and was en route to a “semi-Brexit” under May. A day prior, Brexit secretary David Davis also resigned from his position.
