John Dingell, Longest Serving Member of Congress, Dies at 92

John Dingell, a Michigan Democrat who served in Congress from 1955 until 2015, died Thursday at the age of 92, according to The Detroit News. “Congressman Dingell died peacefully today at his home in Dearborn, surrounded by his wife Deborah,” a statement from Rep. Debbie Dingell’s office stated. “He was a lion of the United States Congress and a loving son, father, husband, grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered for his decades of public service to the people of Southeast Michigan, his razor sharp wit, and a lifetime of dedication to improving the lives of all who walk this earth.” Dingell had reportedly been admitted to hospice care just recently after he was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. According to the newspaper, Dingell was a “champion of the auto industry” in his 59 years in office, and had a hand in writing one of the country’s “major environmental and energy laws.” On Wednesday, just a day before his death, Dingell tweeted from his account thanking his followers for their “incredibly kind words and prayers.” “You’re not done with me just yet,” he wrote.
