The Department of Justice has filed criminal charges against 11 individuals thought to be part of the Central American migrant caravan that has frequently incurred President Trump’s Twitter wrath in recent weeks. While hundreds of migrants have arrived at U.S.-Mexico border checkpoints this week after nearly a month of traveling with the caravan, the 11 individuals are accused of trying to bypass the official border crossings. “The United States will not stand by as our immigration laws are ignored and our nation’s safety is jeopardized,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement announcing the charges. Two Salvadorans, six Hondurans, and three Guatemalans face charges, according to a federal official cited by CNN. Ten were charged with illegally entering the U.S., while one faces a felony charge for allegedly entering the country after earlier being deported Despite Trump’s demands for the caravan to be stopped before it could reach the border, eight women and children from the group became the first to enter U.S. territory with asylum requests Monday.
