Kenyan Teacher Who Gave His Pay to Poor Students Wins $1 Million Excellent Educator Award
HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
A Kenyan science teacher who taught students in the remote village of Pwani, Kenya, has just won a $1 million prize as an exceptional educator in a global competition. Though Peter Tabichi has just one computer and intermittent Internet access, he has still been able to make sure most of his students—many of whom are orphans—go to college. The educator also donated his earnings to the poorest families of the community and those living in single-family situations. Tabichi had never been on a plane before he flew to Dubai to collect his prize. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said in a statement that Tabichi’s story “is the story of Africa,” according to the Associated Press. “You give me faith that Africa’s best days are ahead of us and your story will light the way for future generations.”
