Baz Luhrmann
In “Elvis,” Hollywood’s everyman plays a ghoulish villain. But it’s not the first wacky role Hanks has chosen in recent years—and it won’t be the last.
Even those who hated the wild “Elvis” movie have come out fawning over its star’s performance. But real fans have known the former teen-TV heartthrob had this in him.
“He’s white???? He’s white????!!!!” exclaims Tom Hanks’ Colonel Tom Parker. It’s so outrageous, you can’t help but laugh.
This relentless 2.5-hour biopic, premiering in Cannes, “lurches about flashing its gold like a drunk old millionaire in a strip joint,” writes Caspar Salmon.
Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy biopic stars Butler as the King of Rock and Roll (yes, that’s really him singing) and Hanks as his notorious manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
“To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” Hanks said in a statement.
The $28 million Broadway adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s movie is loud, colorful, and beautifully costumed. But the characters look lost, and Satine remains a decorative object.
