A law firm filed a class-action lawsuit against the parent company of the popular sparkling beverage La Croix, alleging the “all natural” drink actually contains “number of artificial ingredients,” Popular Science reports. The firm, Beaumont Costales, claims Natural Beverage Corporation is incorporating the “synthetic” materials limonene, linalool propionate, and linalool into its drinks. The firm claims those ingredients cause cancers and are used in “cockroach insecticide.” Popular Science fact-checked those claims and reported that the three ingredients “don’t exactly qualify as synthetic” and are not “dangerous” to humans, as the lawsuit states. Limonene is reported to be a “naturally occurring chemical” that is derived from citrus peels. There is reportedly “inadequate evidence” that the ingredient causes cancer. The publication states linalool as a “naturally occurring” flavor agent found in “flowers and spice plants.” While it is used in cockroach insecticide, it is not dangerous to humans. Lastly, linalyl propionate is described as a “flavoring and fragrance additive” derived from “ginger and lavender.” According to CBS 3, the lawsuit claims that Natural Beverage Corporation is “intentionally misleading consumers” and seeks to “award damages to those who purchased the drink under the assumption that it was all natural.”
