Louis Vuitton Ditches Michael Jackson-Inspired Pieces Following New Child-Sex Claims
MISJUDGED
Louis Vuitton is ending production of its Michael Jackson-inspired pieces after multiple new allegations of child sexual abuse were made against him in the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland. At its January menswear show—which took place just over a week before the documentary’s premiere—several pieces were showcased that paid homage to the singer. They included an Egyptian-like shendyt kilt similar to one worn by Jackson in the “Remember the Time” video; flag-print pieces inspired by “We Are the World;” and a jacket based on Jackson’s from the “Beat It” video. Guests were also sent invitations on a rhinestone-encrusted glove similar to those worn by Jackson. The items were due to go on sale this summer but production will now be scrapped. On Thursday, Virgil Abloh, men’s artistic director at Vuitton, said: “I am aware that in light of this documentary the show has caused emotional reactions. I strictly condemn any form of child abuse, violence, or infringement against any human rights. My intention for this show was to refer to Michael Jackson as a pop-culture artist.”
