PEN American Center, a literary and human-rights organization filed a lawsuit against President Trump on Tuesday, alleging the president has violated the First Amendment and “his oath to uphold the Constitution.” The suit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, claims Trump’s meddling in the proposed merger of AT&T and CNN, his past threats against Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos, and others as examples of “official acts” meant to stifle free speech. “President Trump has First Amendment rights and is free to criticize the press vehemently, but he is not free to use the power and authority of the United States government to punish and stifle it,” the complaint states.
