A proposal to ban the sale of fur products in Los Angeles advanced in the City Council on Tuesday. The Associated Press reports that the council voted “unanimously” for the city attorney to draft an “ordinance that will prohibit the manufacture and sale of new fur products.” The ordinance will be presented to the council on a future date for final approval, and the ban would take effect two years later. If officially enacted, Los Angeles would be the largest city to ban new fur products. “This is something that is not just a good legislative win, it’s a moral win,” Councilman Bob Blumenfield said. “We feel like we’re evolving as a city as people to stop this kind of unnecessary cruelty.” The ban would reportedly apply to “apparel made in whole or in part of fur,” including items as big as coats to smaller ones like keychains. Only used fur products could be sold under the ban, though the council asked the city attorney to look into the use of fur in religious organizations and possible exemptions. The City of West Hollywood, Berkeley, and San Francisco, have all already banned fur sales in their jurisdictions.
