Video: Warning Issued After Mountain Lion Kills Pet Dog in L.A.
TRAGIC
A neighborhood in Los Angeles County is on edge after a mountain lion attacked and killed a pit bull as its owner was taking it for a walk. A driver caught the shocking footage obtained by KTLA on Saturday night, showing the massive wild cat holding the small dog lifeless in the middle of a suburban street in Sylmar, California. The driver was able to scare the mountain lion away from the dog, but the canine was already dead. The dog was later identified as Gigi, a pit bull recently rescued by Southern California Pit Bull Rescue—and the organization’s tag was still on her collar. Mark Rulon, the rescue organization’s executive director, came to pick up the dog. “Apparently, the adopters father was walking Gigi, when the mountain lion jumped on her,” Rulon wrote in a post on Facebook. “He said he kicked the mountain lion, but, it grabbed her.” Rulon also said Gigi had no visible signs of trauma—leading him to believe she died quickly after the puma broke her neck. The Sylmar Neighborhood Council issued a wildlife warning on Sunday, confirming the mountain lion sighting and asking neighbors to remain safe and aware of their local wildlife.
