Police in China confirmed that they’ve arrested a prominent U.S.-based photographer who had been missing for more than a month, his wife told reporters. Award-winning Chinese photographer Lu Guang, who lives in New York, uses his work to expose the harsh reality of life in China. His wife Xu Xiaoli said she was informed that her husband was arrested in Kashgar city in the country’s far west region of Xinjiang, but added that she hasn’t been told what the charges against him are. Lu won first prize in the World Press Photo contest for a series on Chinese villagers who became infected with HIV after selling their own blood. He disappeared at the start of November while traveling in Xinjiang, according to to Xu. China has faced worldwide condemnation for the crackdown on and mass detention of as many as 1 million Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.
