Luxury Cruise Ship Fails Inspection

The Centers for Disease Control’s ship sanitation unit launched a surprise inspection of the Silver Shadow after an anonymous crew member sent photos of meat stashed in the sinks of crew members’ rooms and food trolleys hidden in hallways—part of a systematic effort to avoid citations during a previous inspection. The ship received a failing grade of 82 (84 is “less than satisfactory”), and crew members said they were asked to store unrefrigerated meat and cheese in their rooms during the inspection. One lawyer who files suits against cruise lines for abuses said that, according to employees, such inspection-evasion techniques are typical.
