Some Southern California residents were in for a surprise on Thursday, when snow fell in the area for the first time in years, including the Santa Monica Mountains above Malibu and in neighborhoods like Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, and Calabasas. Baffled residents took to Twitter to post footage of the uncharacteristic weather. According to NBC News, a cold front in Canada that pushed down temperatures and attracted moisture reportedly caused the small snowfall in certain areas. “Correct, that is snow! Lots of confusion today,” The National Weather Service in Los Angeles tweeted. Snow also reportedly fell in the frequently snowed-on areas in the region, like the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains. According to Stewart, snow was spotted in areas as low as 1,000 feet but it was “spotty.” The NWS also told NBC that “measurable snow” hasn't graced downtown Los Angeles since 1949, and today's smattering of snow was unlikely to make or break any records.
