A father-of-two was delivering pizza to the Fort Hamilton military base in Brooklyn on Friday when he was arrested and turned over to immigration officials. Pablo Villavicencio, 32, presented his ID NYC at the base but was asked for more identification, according to BuzzFeed News. When he couldn’t provide it, he was detained and then turned over to ICE. “There are no words that can define the drama that my daughters and I are living. From one moment to another, life changed for us and all I ask now is: Do not go to deport my husband, give him a chance,” his wife, Sandra Chica, said.
Fort Hamilton spokesperson Cathy SantoPietro said Villavicencio had tried to “make a delivery without valid Department of Defense identification.” “Upon signing a waiver permitting a background check, Department of the Army Access Control standard for all visitors, an active Immigration and Customs Enforcement warrant was discovered on file,” she told BuzzFeed. Villavicencio is undocumented but in the process of applying for a green card, according to City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca, who called the man’s arrest “scandalous, cruel and useless.”
