After spending three days in the hospital for an acute respiratory infection, South African icon Nelson Mandela is being discharged to receive home-based care. South Africa's surgeon general said that the former president had responded well to his treatment. The 92 year old, famous for spending 27 years in jail fighting apartheid before becoming South Africa's first black president, has increasingly withdrawn from the public eye as he has grown more frail. There had been no word on his condition as his hospital stay stretched on, sparking worries that his health might be failing.
