U.S. Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham will arrive in Cairo Monday in an effort to revive a diplomatic end to the crumbling political situation. The envoys will reportedly meet with jailed members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the party of former president Mohamed Morsi, who was overthrown in a military coup in July. More than 100 pro-Morsi supporters have been killed in violence since the July coup, and two mass sit-ins were held just this past weekend in support of Morsi. Over the weekend, Deputy U.S. Secretary of State William Burns held talks with members of the Brotherhood as well as a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy and the European Union. Army chief Gen. Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has insisted peace is possible if all sides reject violence.
