Sen. John McCain is standing by his claim that illegal immigrants started some of the wildfires currently burning in Arizona, despite criticism from civil rights groups. “There is substantial evidence that some of these fires have been caused by people who have crossed our border illegally,” McCain said on Monday. “The answer to that part of the problem is to get a secure border.” Immigrant-caused fires aren’t a new topic for McCain, who last July asked the Government Accountability Office to conduct a study on fires caused by immigrants and smugglers on the southern border. Tom Berglund, a Forest Service spokesman, said there was “no evidence that I’m aware” indicating immigrants were responsible for the Wallow fire.
