Former Vice President Mike Pence will likely see Donald Trump sworn in as the 47th president in person Monday in the U.S. Capitol, where Trump’s supporters scoured the halls four years ago chanting for Pence to be hanged for refusing to give in to Trump’s demand that he help overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Pence is planning on attending the inauguration, The New York Times reported Friday, citing two individuals with knowledge of his schedule, one of whom told the paper that the former vice president was invited by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. That committee is comprised of three Democrats and three Republicans.
Since the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, Pence and Trump’s relationship has been frosty. Pence, who mounted a short-lived campaign for president last year, repeatedly emphasized that he had no authority to do Trump’s bidding.
The pair met earlier this month at the Washington National Cathedral for former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, which was believed to be their first face-to-face encounter since the final days of Trump’s first term.
While Pence and Trump shook hands there, former Second Lady Karen Pence appeared to not acknowledge Trump. It’s unclear if she will attend Monday’s inauguration, which has been moved to the Capitol rotunda due to expected cold temperatures.
One high-profile absence that is known, however, is Michelle Obama.
