Miley Cyrus Criticized for Climbing Endangered Joshua Tree in California
IT’S NOT THE CLIMB
Miley Cyrus is facing criticism for posting two photos of herself sitting in an endangered Joshua tree. The Instagram famous trees are endangered and considered a protected species in California. They also have a shallow root structure, which makes them less able to handle additional weight. People quickly responded to the photos posted on Tuesday, and called for Cyrus to take the photos down because they could encourage others to climb the trees. George Land, a spokesperson for the Joshua Tree National Park, said he wants people to respect the delicate landscape, but also hopes they don’t get carried away in their criticism of the singer. “While we would appreciate it that people would respect the fact that desert vegetation is a little bit fragile at times, we don’t want to incite people to carry out some kind of threat against Miley Cyrus,” Land said. “We would just remind her that she has a big following... and it would be greatly appreciated by the Park Service and the people around the area if she would maybe curb that type of activity, especially posting it on her social media page.”
