Miley Cyrus is being sued for $300 million for alleged copyright infringement by a Jamaican songwriter who claims Cyrus’ hit song “We Can’t Stop” too closely resembles his song “We Run Things.” Michael May says his 1988 song is “a favorite for lovers of reggae music worldwide,” and “about 50 percent” of Cyrus’ song comes from his. The singer’s allegations include that the Cyrus lyrics “We run things / Things don’t run we,” misappropriated his own lyric, “We run things / Things no run we.” May claims he won “formal copyright protection” for the song in November, and is also seeking to halt further sales and performances of Cyrus’ song. “We Can’t Stop,” from Miley’s 2013 album Bangerz, hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August of that same year. Cyrus and Sony did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
