Mumbai Gunman Sentenced to Death

Verdicts

Puts end to India's fastest major terrorism trial.

A Pakistani man was found guilty and sentenced to death by an Indian court for his involvement in the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai. The judgment was swift, putting an end to the fastest major terrorism trial in India's history. (Although appeals could drag on for some time.) In November 2008, 10 gunman terrorized the city of Mumbai, killing 166 people in a 60-hour rampage. The death penalty is rarely used in India. “The penalty should be in proportion to the crime committed,” said the court's judge. “The man has lost his right for humanitarian treatment. The court has to keep in mind not only the rights of the accused, but also of the victims and society.” (Update: Earlier version dated the attacks in May 2008.)
