Nancy Pelosi will not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
Pelosi attended the president-elect’s first inauguration in 2017, but will be a mystery no-show this time around, reported ABC News and The Hill.
A spokesperson for the former House speaker confirmed Pelosi will not attend but did not state a reason why. The 84-year-old underwent hip replacement surgery last month after she took a “hard fall” on marble stairs during a state trip to Luxembourg.
The California Democrat has been active at the Capitol this month despite the surgery, however. She was present for both the first day of the new Congress and at the counting of the electoral votes on Jan. 6—though she was not sporting her typical stilettos.

Pelosi is the second big name to reveal they won’t attend, joining former first lady Michelle Obama.
The California lawmaker has been a regular at inaugurations, attending 11 in total. That includes the swearing-in for John F. Kennedy in 1961 when she was still in high school.

Pelosi and Trump’s frosty relationship is well-documented. Four years ago, she spent Trump’s final days as president trying to oust him from the Oval Office—via the 25th Amendment—before Joe Biden was sworn in.
Trump more recently called Pelosi “an enemy from within,” “evil,” “sick,” and “a crooked person.”
The president-elect does not have any room to complain about Pelosi skipping out on his big day, however. He infamously broke decades of precedent in 2021 when he refused to turn up to Biden’s swearing-in.
