Hollywood writer and director Carl Rinsch was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Monday, after he was found guilty of stealing $11 million from Netflix. The director told the streaming service he needed the money to finish his show White Horse, but instead transferred the cash to his personal account and spent large sums. Along with prison time, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff of the Southern District of New York has ordered Rinsch to repay the $11 million to Netflix, participate in a mental health treatment program and refrain from narcotics. Keanu Reeves, who starred in Rinsch’s film 47 Ronin, has come to the director’s defense, writing a letter to the judge urging him to consider leniency in the case, to no avail. “This process has forced me to confront things about my health, my judgment and my life,” Rinsch said. “I failed to recognize the danger of the state I was in.”
