North Korea on Sunday launched at least two suspected ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan, just days after joint military drills were conducted in the region by South Korea and the U.S. The Prime Minister’s Office of Japan confirmed the launch of one “suspected ballistic missile” on Sunday, but offered few other details. According to NK News, Japan’s defense ministry said two were apparently fired; it observed the launch of the first at approximately 7:47 a.m. and by 7:54 a.m., the missile had already touched down. A second missile was detected at 8:24 a.m. and landed just seven minutes later, at 8:31 a.m. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff had not yet confirmed a second missile. NK News reports the short flight times indicate the missiles were short-range. It is the first launch of its kind in over two months, when the North fired a ballistic missile Jan. 14. The launch comes just days after the end of the joint South Korean-U.S. military drills, which North Korea swiftly decried, viewing it as an invasion rehearsal.
