Obama Honors Nobility of War Dead

Memorial Day

As tributes unfold around the country.

Though President Obama had to cancel his appearance in Chicago due to bad weather, he still spoke to military families at Maryland’s Andrews Air Force Base and delivered his Memorial Day speech on Monday. "At its core, the nobility and majesty of Memorial Day can be found in the story of ordinary Americans who became extraordinary for the most simple of reasons,” he said. “They loved their country so deeply, so profoundly, that they were willing to give their very lives to keep it safe and free.” In Washington, Vice President Joe Biden was on hand to lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery before joining mourners for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. And in Major League Baseball, all games stopped at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence.
